“Christ Himself died once and for all for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, tolead us to God.”

There is no act we can perform that mitigates the suffering of Jesus. When we find ourselves motivated to action by the thought that we will somehow “earn points” by
doing a good deed, going the second mile, or behaving generously when our heart is not in it, we diminish in our minds the truth of God’s gift of His Son: that Christ Himself
died once and for all for sins. The work of salvation is finished on the cross. We can not take it back, undo the suffering, or refuse the gift. Our job is not to be Christ, but to
follow Christ.

DEAR GOD, FORGIVE US WHEN WE TRY TO ACT OUT OUR OWN SALVATION, WHEN WE TRY TO LIVE AS IF WE CAN EARN YOUR GRACE. HELP US TO FOLLOW THE PATH THAT YOUR SON HAS GIVEN US, LIVING A FAITH OF ACTION NOT WORDS, AND OF SUBSTANCE NOT SHADOW. IN THE NAME OF YOUR SON OUR SAVIOR AND LORD.
AMEN.
