“Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

During a rainstorm in 1989 in Kenya, Africa, I thought of the crews that repair broken power lines. They travel around, looking for downed wires and for areas that are blacked out. When they find a break, they reconnect the wires so that electricity can flow once again. I thought of workers connecting the wires and then of lights shining in a previously dark section of town, bringing light and warmth to all. Christians are like power-line crews. We move about searching for those who need God’s light in their lives. Our tools are faith, lessons of scripture, and past experiences of God moving in our lives. We go to those who are in need, mending broken hearts and connecting those who are powerless to the God who provides power and purpose. We do what we can to open channels for the Spirit’s power to flow. God will do the rest.

LOVING GOD, LET YOUR SPIRIT FLOW THROUGH US TO BRING HEALING TO THE SICK, COURAGE TO THE DISCOURAGED AND HOPE TO THE DESPAIRING. LET THAT HEALING BEGIN IN ME, GOD, SO THAT I EXPERIENCE ANEW THE GENTLE FLOW OF YOUR LOVE IN MY HEART. IN JESUS’ NAME. AMEN.
