“Jesus wept.”
A friend told me his father-in-law had, as a child, been required to recite a favorite scripture verse in Sunday School class. Not to be embarrassed, he found the very shortest verse in the
entire Bible to present to the class. As I was preparing this devotional, my friend Barbara called. She is facing a personal tragedy and I feel so keenly her distress. “Jesus wept.”
Are these words important to her? God gave us the ability to feel, to experience and express emotion, all emotions. And God sent his Son to live on earth, to feel them too.
DEAR LORD, HELP US TO KNOW THAT LIFE IS ALL EXPERIENCE. SUSTAIN OUR COURAGE TO EXPERIENCE PAIN. LET US SOMEHOW SEE THE VERY LONG HORIZON THAT LEADS INTO INFINITY, THE LINE THAT CONNECTS US WITH WHAT IS BEYOND. LET US FEEL YOUR PRESENCE IN OUR DISTRESS. AMEN.
