Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, We see, your sin remains.”

This passage follows a pretty humorous exchange between a formerly blind man and the Pharisees (he is no longer blind due to Jesus, of course). In this exchange, the Pharisees try to make the now sighted man say that Jesus is not of God because he healed on the Sabbath. This was their main beef with Jesus: healing on the Sabbath, never mind that he was curing lepers, healing blind men, and raising the dead! I can see that this is an utterly ridiculous stance. They loved the law more than the spirit of the law. I struggle daily to live what I believe. It is hard. Rituals get stuck in my head and the spirit of the rituals can be lost. Just when you think you have nothing to worry about, complacency becomes your biggest enemy. The more I learn, the more I see that I have yet to learn.

LORD, I STRUGGLE WITH SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS, JUST LIKE THE PHARISEES DID. HELP ME TO RESIST BECOMING SO COMFORTABLE IN MY SPIRITUALITY THAT I FORGET TO CHECK MY BLIND SPOT. HELP ME TO MAKE ALL OF MY DECISIONS BASED IN LOVE AND COMPASSION, NOT THE LETTER OF THE LAW. AMEN.
