Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- Philippians 4:4-7
This has come to be one of the most reassuring passages which I treasure. Rejoice always, the Lord is near! I will freely admit that I am a worrier... yes, I worry about a lot of things that are not really all that significant, or other things that I can't really do anything about. But over the years, I have continued to read and meditate on this scripture, and it has helped me learn that worry and anxiety only serve to rob us of the joy that is ours, the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding! Thanks be to God!
Help me, gracious God, to put your word in my heart so that I may live in the peace which surpasses all understanding! For I know that you will provide for me in love and generosity, and I know that the gifts you give will guard my heart and mind in Jesus! Amen!
I know, this is a lot to read, but it has been quite a busy summer! We've been in and out of the office a lot, but we've kept up with devotional requests, although some other things may have slipped... The following are prayer requests lifted up in the past weeks. we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Deuteronomy 10:19 And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.
For everyone who is incarcerated and their families…
Hebrews 13:3 Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison,
and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
For victims of violence…

Pray for your own loved ones, and your personal petitions:
Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have
received it, and it will be yours.
God is not bound by space and time, so physically apart but together in our prayers, we join to worship and bow down to the one who created heaven and earth, who loves us beyond our understanding, and who doesn’t just wait for us to come home, but rather runs to meet us where we are! Open your arms wide to receive such amazing love!

We often focus our attention during Lent on our outreach ministry to prisoners through “A New Day in Christ.” Being involved with this ministry allows us the opportunity to be part of the larger work of the universal church, even though we are a very small community. We know, without a doubt, that the devotional guide ministers to the least and the lost. Because we have been led into a ministry that, it often seems, no one else wants. There are no limits to the opportunity to connect with thousands of people across the country in a real, personal way.
Wait—what? How personal? Only a few of those we have corresponded with through the devotional ministry have ever actually shown up for worship!
Through the devotional guide, everyone who has written a meditation has shared a small part of their own faith journey with the thousands of recipients across the country. And those people are so deeply appreciative of that part of you. They pray for us, First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and for many of you individually by name. God is also ministering to us in this work. God has provided us meaningful opportunities to serve and share fellowship in a loving work environment. Some people have found volunteering to be great training on the way to a “real job.” Others find it personally rewarding to share in the process of providing a gift of great value to the world.
Great value? Really? It’s only a book after all… it isn’t even the whole Bible!
True, we generally do not share Bibles with those with whom we correspond. We are grateful to know there are other ministries who distribute Bibles among prisoners as their primary mission. So we share a little reminder, every day, from a regular person, someone who may also be struggling, learning to be more faithful, but took the time to think about scripture and write a message. And it is just enough to remind them that this is a journey we are all on together. We also recently partnered with The Cumberland Presbyterian Discipleship Ministries Team, headquartered at the denominational Center in Memphis, to distribute the remainder copies of the “Encounter” adult Bible study booklets among prisoners who are seeking a more serious study of the Bible.
If we recognized that God is in control of this ministry, we can’t expect know where or how it is being used. But sometimes we get little glimpses. A phone call came in a few days ago. My best recollection of her words follow…
Hi, I’m Connie. I’m a deputy in a jail in Kentucky…
(When I hear these words, I expect what follows to be one of these requests: 1.) please stop sending your book to this jail, or 2.) please send 100 cases of your book to distribute to the inmates.)
…and I’m a single mom, I have to work two jobs to keep things together. So I work third shift at the jail, and with my kids and my second job, I have a real hard time getting any sleep during the day. I am just exhausted, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I was brought up in church, but then life got complicated, I thought I didn’t have time, so I drifted off. Things have really been going the wrong direction in my life, but a few months ago, a female inmate showed me your book. This action was so out of character for this girl to approach me with anything other that hatred and disrespect. It really shook me up, and I was trying to not show it, because in the jail you have to be hard. But God ministered to me through that inmate, and your book. The reading went straight to my heart and I wanted to know where this book came from. Then I was amazed that she pulled out your letter and gave it to me. She told me you would send me one if I just asked. It’s just unexplainable how unlikely this whole conversation was, I know now that God was working in her to get to me! I ordered the devotional and every day it seems like the message is just what I need to hear. God is breaking down the walls, and there is joy and hope in my life again. I have a friend who is also going through a hard time, and I want you to send him a copy of this devotional book. I want him to know he’s not alone!
This conversation blew me away! The depth of layers of this ministry became visible me. How many people have been enabled to share the love God has shown to them? First you, when you wrote the message, then the creative minds that conceptualized and put it on the page. What an accomplishment for all of us to be proud of. But then we send it out there into the world. And it is beyond our control, and it takes on its own work and becomes part of the spiritual practice of people we don’t know… and they share it with others, it becomes their ministry too, and God uses our words to stir the hearts of people who have never been to Texas (what a shame).
One of the things I try to do is keep track of who we’re sending the devotional to and where they reside. But it’s impossible. I got a letter from Jay in TDCJ Central Unit in Sugar Land, TX that provided a surprise to me, because for whatever reason, Central Unit will not allow the devotional guide in. This bothers me, since Sugar Land is right here in our own backyard. But Jay wrote:
I found a copy of your blue book called “A New Day in Christ”
in the cabinet where the fire extinguisher is supposed to be. That fire extinguisher has been gone ever since I been in this unit (almost 12 years) but for some reason, that’s where your little book showed up. I need to confess to someone that the day I found it, I was in such deep depression, I had been planning a way to take my own life. Finding that book seemed like a sign. The reading kind of soothed me, and I just went back to my bunk and I prayed for the first time in my life. It felt like God lifted a weight off of me. I read it every day for over three years. It was kind of torn up when I found it, now it’s really worn out, pages are starting to come out.
Will you send me another one? I’ve still got 8 years.
I am currently the one and only staff person at New Day in Christ Ministries. I am the one who gets all the calls from the finicky postal employees about ridiculous postal regulation and massive rate hikes. I am the one who gets to listen to all the heartbreaking stories of lives wasted by drugs and families torn up by incarceration. I am the one who gets to hear all the praise stories like Connie’s and Jay’s. I am truly blessed.
Please lift up the people of West Side Health Authority in Chicago, Pastor Albert Housley and all the staff there working to assist in the re-entry process of thousands of ex-offenders. May the Spirit of the Living God pour afresh upon them, bring them strength and guidance, and uplift them as they encounter the challenges that their mission faces each day. Pray for Talawna G. in Bob Wiley Detention Facility, Visalia, CA. "Can you please pray for my family? For the Lord to protect us all and lead us all to do his will. Please pray that He fills me with the Holy Spirit to stop turning back to the world. I know that Jesus died for my sins, though I try to confess my sins I still don't turn away from them... I want to stop drinking, but I don't have enough will power and I know it's not impossible for God to take away my addiction. I need stronger faith in God and perseverance. Please pray for me."

"I just wanted to take a few minutes and express my gratitude for your daily guide. I was incarcerated and during that time a friend of mine had your devotional guide sent to me. I was so thankful for it and I have to say that it made a huge difference in my life. I used my time in prison to reflect on my life and the need for change. I turned to God and know now that being incarcerated actually saved my life. I have since been released but the materials I received from you as well as another Church has stayed with me and my faith gets stronger every day. I can't thank you enough and just want you to know that the guides you send to people help them more than you know. My niece has recently been sent to prison and is in dire need of spiritual help. Since I know how my experience turned my life around, I pray that it will do the same for her. Would you please send a daily devotional guide to her? Keep up the good work!" Anonymous
"Thank you so much for your ministry and for sending me a copy of A New Day in Christ devotional guide. It is a great resource, tool, and help in my daily walk with Christ. I am commiting myself to being your partner in prayer in support of your ministry. May our wonderful Lord and Father in heaven continue to bless you and allow you to grow, prosper and increase in His work." Robert T. WVDC
"I have read your letter and I want to talk to whoever this may concern. I was in the county jail for about a month. Before that I was on the road to destruction. I did lots of wrong in my life, and finally I see the light. It has taken me a very long time to actually understand, and I feel reborn. I know I truly have been saved from my sinful way of life and I have been cleansed and changed and forgiven. Please pray for me and I will pray as well for all the people struggling here in this prison who have not accepted Jesus Christ." Reuben R. OK
"I would really like to thank you all for sending me a perpetual daily devotional. God has spoken to me by receiving this booklet. I was really depressed and lonely due to the fact that I was sentenced to an 8 yr term. But this was a sign from God reminding me that I am not alone, God will always be there by my side. What keeps me in wonder is how you found me at just the right time I needed comfort. I thank you, and I thank God for you." Charles R. CA
"I've been so lost and sad for awhile now. It seems that no one cares about anyone anymore. I read my Bible and pray everyday, I talk to Jesus everyday and ask him to help me and thank him for letting me wake up. I have a bad heart and it hurts to know that not even your family will talk to me. I'm not a bad person, but I got messed up in drugs 10 years ago and now I'm paying the price.I turned my self in to make things right. I have lost everything in my life, I only wish my family would stand by me. " Thomas T. TX

Pray for Tobi F. in Rankin Co Jail, Brandon, MS. "Please keep me and my two girls in your prayers. I got in a trouble after my mother passed away. I got depressed and started running with the wrong crowd but now I am trying to get my life back together so I can be a wonderful mother to my daughters like my mother was to me."
For these and all your children, God we pray. We lift up the broken hearts and the forgotten lives, the ones for whom you sent Jesus into the world. We pray that in our busy celebrations this season, we carve out the time to serve those who matter to you most. In so doing, may our lives be made more in the image of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Who is your right hand man? the person on our right should be one we can lean on, one who will guide our path, or one who is there for us in the time of need. In Psalm 16:8 it says "I have set the Lord continually before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken."
In biblical times, the right hand was the most distinguished position, reserved for one's chief advisor & supporter. That's what God is. God is our advisor and our supporter and we should take advantage of that. It seems that when we face troubles we look to our left and seek our own advice and our own support. Our way never works, that's why David wrote in the book of Psalms 25:4 "Make me know your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths."
God stands at the right hand of the needy (Psalm 109:31) and right now we need God. Stop stressing, stop worrying, stop hurting, stop lying, stop cheating, stop using drugs, stop living the way you are living, just stop! Stop! STOP! Turn to your right hand & let God help you. Now is the right time.

For these and our brothers and sisters everywhere, we ask that their hearts be filled with the peace and love that comes only from you, Creator God.
Thanksgiving is coming soon! From my cell window I can see the mist of the morning dew on the golden and red falling leaves. This is a time of family love. Love isn't love until you give it away.
Family is love!
Family love is Patience
Family love is Kindness
Family love is Generosity
Family love is Gentleness
Family love is Enduring
Family love is Belief
Family love is Hope
Family love is Dreams
Family love is Life.
I have seen the tears of inmates glittering under the sunrays. The tears of joy, of gratefulness, when the inmates know that they are "coming home" to their families, after months, years, 10 years, 20 years, 25 years... away... so far away from home... far away from family love.
I have felt the hearts of Faith, the dreams of Hope by holding and reading the Bible, by praying for God's forgiveness. I have heard the voices of prayers like the sound of soft rain calling for God's love, for God's guidance.
I am a Vietnamese American woman, I was a CEO, I have tasted the meaning of success, of achievements, of wealth... and now I am in Chowchilla Correctional Center, a place with so many silent crying voices for the lights of love and words of Hope.
I have gazed at people, the face of broken hearts--just on their new path, new season of life that they have to go through. This is also a journey of my tranquility pathway. Some of life's changes are welcome, others break our heart. What is there that make me feel "Peace" and "Tranquility" from my struggled soul? The recognition of God's love, God's wisdom... not my wisdom any more.
From God's love I am the woman who holds tears longing for "freedom" my own freedom. The freedom of my life that I have traded for "sorrow" and "forgiveness."
I am holding on to faith for hope and grace. From the love of God, I have the courage to live the way I know and the way I should. "Love bears all things, believes all things, hope all things, endures all things." 1 Cor 13:7
Prayers to you all, please pray for me.

I am a part of a culture of men who seem to have been condemned.
We are the ones who live fast, live short, and get to spend time in the pen.
Most of us have been exposed to the elements
of confinement for quite a while.
From a young age, even as boys, block walls had robbed us of our smiles.
Forced to grow up too soon, forgetting what it was to be a child…
We’ve become accustomed to being locked up. No longer resisting its sting.
Conformed to this darker world, harboring the hate that it breeds.
The hard, solid concrete embedded around our hearts.
The ice-cold metal positioned firmly in our deepest parts.
Dead or non-existent to any “society” outside our own,
Surrounded by cops and killers,
gunners and drug runners,
this is where we make our home.
Not by choice, but rather by chance.
Our socio-economic beginnings leading us to our
The rich are not here, nor the famous and loved.
Only guys like me, addicted, afflicted, and restricted,
Whose only hope is in God above.
We are the living without real lives,
Our kids have no value, neither do our mothers and wives.
No one sees their struggles, feels their pain or hears them cry.
“Society” just turns the other way,
refusing to even look them in the eye.
We’ve been sentenced to hell, yet we are expected to excel.
And when we return we get double,
because we are the ones who failed.
They say prison is where we are supposed to be “corrected”
So what’s this disease we’ve all acquired,
as though we’ve only come to be “infected?”
We were never this sick as kids, all we needed was
help for the bad things we did.
Help that never came, still we are the one to blame.
In all reality, we are merely “livestock,”
investments for those who feed on our misery.
We’ve been overcome by bigger guns,
and brains equipped for much usury.
They make their dollar at the price of our pain,
Hoping and insuring that our offspring play in their game.
Without even knowing or intending this to be,
I’ve been a piece of the machine
That’s working to make my kids just like me.
But who wants to see our own sons & daughters
treated like animals and led to their own slaughter?
I sure don’t, which is why I’ve decided
to depend on the will of my heavenly Father…
Only HE holds the key to truly set me free…
Inside and out. HE can change things completely.
Maybe no one else seems to care or even notice us,
But GOD so loved the world that He gave His
only begotten Son JESUS to set the captives free.
And heal the broken hearted,
to begin a good work in our lives,
and finish once it is started.
To the world we are the people not deserving of a life,
But to JESUS CHRIST we are precious souls He bought at a very high price.
All it takes is a little faith in Him and true sorrow for our sins.
Believing in His love for us, knowing that He forgives,
Trusting in His word and holding on to all His promises.
Then darkness will dissolve and turn into light,
death will die and give birth to new life.
The chains and burdens which were once so heavy and strong
Will disappear into nothing to the place where they belong.
Behold, the LORD has made for me all things brand new.
And if you want he will do all this just for you too.
Whoever you are, PLEASE COME WITH ME to a place of peace and rest
And the love of God for all eternity, where you’ll enjoy nothing but the BEST…
GOD BLESS YOU!!!
